An attempt by Senate Democrats to compromise with Republican Governor Bruce Rauner on one point of his Turnaround Agenda was short-lived.
On Wednesday, State Senator Andy Manar and others presented a proposal to freeze property taxes for two years, as well as enact school funding reform.
Senate Republicans quickly killed that proposal on the floor and it did not have the supermajority needed to pass the Senate.
Senate Republican Leader Christine Radogno said that the bill was “a good starting point”, but couldn’t support it. She says she hopes the next attempt at the issue includes local government spending controls that Rauner has called for.
