Unemployment numbers in Illinois are down, according to data released on Thursday by the Illinois Department of Employment Security… but there’s more to that 5.9% unemployment rate than meets the eye.
IDES Director Jeff Mays says that they lower number is partly because people are leaving the state’s workforce altogether. Year over year, June 2015’s unemployment rate was ½ of one-percent lower than 2014.
Jim Schultz, Director of the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity says while the lower rate is encouraging, its comparison to the number of workers leaving the workforce affirms the need for business reforms in Illinois.
Overall, the unemployment rate in Illinois remains higher than the national average.
