Governor Bruce Rauner’s staff payroll is under fire once again.
A report from the Associated Press claims that about $4M – or about half of the overall total – in payroll to employees of the Governor’s Office is being funded, not by the office itself, but by as many as 18 outside agencies.
That figure is about $1M than previously admitted by the Rauner administration during a House committee hearing in June.
The AP says Rauner has not only continued a practice that he criticized during the campaign season, but is doing so at a greater cost than former Governor Pat Quinn.
A Rauner spokesperson, however, disagrees, saying, “You can slice and dice the state payroll in multiple ways, but the two bottom lines are: all payroll is publicly reported, and the Rauner administration is spending less on total agency-wide payroll than the previous administration.”
