New Law Strenghtens Statewide Animal Cruelty Laws

A new state law designed to protect pets in extreme weather has been signed by Governor Bruce Rauner.

The law, sponsored by Senate President John Cullerton, applies to situations where an animal is left in extreme temperature conditions and it is injured or dies as a result. Cullerton says that the law clarifies state animal cruelty statutes, in those circumstances.

First offenses under the law that takes effect in January are a misdemeanor, with additional offenses becoming felonies.
