University of Illinois trustees have voted to dismiss Urbana-Champaign campus Chancellor Phyllis Wise, rather than accept her resignation.
The move saves university $400,000 that would have been paid to Wise a bonus, based upon her years of service as the school’s top official. Governor Bruce Rauner’s office had spoken out strongly against such a payment earlier in the week.
U of I President Timothy Killeen told the Associated Press that he now plans to give Wise an advisory position on the school’s faculty, reporting directly to him.
Wise resigned abruptly last week amid a lawsuit by a professor who had his job offer rescinded by the university over his anti-Israel messages on Twitter, allegations of mistreatment by a handful of former athletes, and an emerging email scandal.
