First Human Case in 2015 of West Nile Virus in Illinois Confirmed

The first human case of the West Nile Virus in Illinois this year has been confirmed in St. Clair County.

That county’s health department says that an adolescent female became ill earlier this month.

The Illinois Department of Public Health says Illinoisans should practice the “Three Rs” to reduce their chance of getting the virus –

Reduce exposure by being outdoors less at times when mosquitoes are active;

Repel them by wearing appropriate bug spray;

and Report dead birds to your local health departments, as dead birds can often be carriers of the virus.

IDPH reports that 44 human cases of the virus were reported in 2014, resulting in four deaths.
