Senate Approves MAP Grant Funding

The Senate has approved a bill that authorizes the state to pay $373M for grants in the Monetary Award Program to low-income college students.

The approval of funds for MAP grants will allow up to 130,000 students to continue getting financial assistance through the program, despite the lack of an approved state budget.

Although the amount appropriated by the bill that passed on a 37-0 vote on Wednesday matches what had been previously requested by Governor Bruce Rauner, the Governor has said that he’s opposed to authorizing additional pieces of the state’s budget without a full budget in place.
