Top Aide to House Speaker Madigan Under Fire for Potential Conflicts of Interest

A top aide to House Speaker Mike Madigan is drawing fire from critics pointing to his work with clients that depend on the State of Illinois for funding.

Steve Brown, who is a contract employee for the state in his role as spokesman for Madigan, has clients that include a program for nursing assistants that saw its state aid more than double from 2011 to 2013, as well as a nonprofit that helps dropouts, which has received over $1.6M in state grants in the last two years.

The Chicago Sun-Times report says that Brown claims he does not lobby the Speaker or other lawmakers on behalf of his clients and he does disclose his clients to Madigan.

Brown, who has worked for Madigan since 1984, is not required to make his clients public, because he is not a state employee
