House Committee Advances Child Care Funding Restoration

An Illinois House committee on Tuesday signed off on a Senate-backed measure to restore cuts to state child care assistance programs, in a move that is drawing sharp criticism from Governor Bruce Rauner’s administration.

Rauner significantly cut funding for the program, effective July 1st, but legislative Democrats say those cuts could lead to working parents landing on welfare.

Rauner spokeswoman Catherine Kelly says that Democrats are continuing to push pieces of state spending through the General Assembly, in an attempt to force a tax hike. Kelly says the moves are “hamstringing the state”.
