Website Operator Files Complaint Against Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office

The operator of a Springfield-area website has filed an appeal with the Illinois Attorney General’s Office, claiming that his website meets the legal definition of “news media” and shouldn’t be subject to certain restrictions of the Freedom of Information Act.

Randy Trams, operator of “Springfield IL Exposed”, says that he publishes “news that other media in town won’t touch” and that he cannot be classified as a “recurrent requester” by the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office.

Under that classification, FOIA requests by Trams are subject to a 21-day response period, rather than the five-day period that is normally used.

Mike Walton, FOIA Officer for the Sheriff’s Office, says that Trams’ activities amount to exploitation and his requests have become a burden to taxpayers to the tune of over $15,000 in overtime costs.
