Illinois DHS: Nearly 5,000 Families Denied Child Care Assistance Since July 1st

Changes to eligibility requirements for state subsidized childcare in Illinois have resulted in nearly 5,000 families being denied access to that care since July 1st… and state officials say the number may actually be larger than that.

The Illinois Department of Human Services released data this week in response to a Freedom of Information Act request by the Service Employees International Union Healthcare Illinois.

That data says more than 4,700 families have been denied subsidized childcare since the new fiscal year began on July 1st, but DHS says the state is behind on processing applications, which may drive the number higher.

A House bill to reverse the tighter standards put into place by Governor Bruce Rauner’s administration may be taken up when lawmakers return to Springfield on Tuesday.
