Manar Proposes Automatic Voter Registration Plan

Illinois would become the latest state in the nation to automatically register its citizens to vote when they apply for a driver’s license or other state ID, under a plan introduced by state Senator Andy Manar.

The Democrat says his proposal would “reduce red tape”, save money, and increase voter participation.

Critics, however, say automatic registration to vote could lead to non-citizens becoming voters, increased voter fraud, and longer lines at DMV facilities across the state.

Census figures cited by the Illinois Senate show 9.7M residents of voting age in Illinois, but only 7.6M registered voters.
