State to Close Youth Detention Facility

The State of Illinois will close one of its youth detention facilities, citing excess capacity versus need.

The Department of Juvenile Justice announced Friday that the Illinois Youth Center – Kewanee will close, leaving the state with five youth facilities and the ability to house 683 offenders.

IDJJ Director Candice Jones says that as of this week, there are 436 youths in the care of the department. Jones also says the closure will allow the state to explore other options for use of the Kewanee facility.
