The largest newspaper (by circulation) in the 50th Senate District has endorsed challenger Bryce Benton over incumbent State Senator Sam McCann in next week’s Republican primary.
From this morning’s edition of the newspaper –
Central Illinois voters have been subjected to one of the most bitter, nastiest, dispiriting campaigns in recent memory in the 50th state Senate district.
Some would say this race was sparked when incumbent Sen. Sam McCann cast the sole Republican vote in favor of a union-backed measure that could have sent state and employee union negotiations to an outside arbiter, which Gov. Bruce Rauner said was an attack on his power to negotiate. McCann said he voted to override Rauner’s veto of the bill because it was the overwhelming wish of constituents in his district, which includes many state workers. Others would say Senator McCann has had situations plaguing him which would bring about the need for change, regardless of party or vote.
Enter Bryce Benton, an Illinois State Police trooper, who filed to challenge McCann.
