Lightning Strike Blows Hole in I-72

A thunderstorm that was moving through the Springfield area on Wednesday is blamed for producing a lightning bolt that blew a hole in the pavement of Interstate 72 and caused flat tires on at least four vehicles.

Illinois State Police said the bolt struck in the eastbound lane of the interstate near Knights Action Park. The hole was about 2 feet in diameter and 6 inches deep.

As of 1:30 p.m., crews from the Illinois Department of Transportation were repairing the damage.
