The General Assembly was supposed to have been in “continuous session” for the month of June, but it has yet to meet in Springfield.
For the third consecutive week, House Speaker Michael Madigan has cancelled a scheduled session day for Wednesday.
Madigan says that, once again, he wants to give legislative working groups time and space to work out a compromise on a state budget that is nearly a full year overdue.
In a brief statement, Madigan says the working groups are scheduled to meet three times this week and agrees with Governor Bruce Rauner that there’s no point in bringing lawmakers back to Springfield without having anything to vote on.
Meanwhile, the state Republican Party has published an article claiming that the longtime House Speaker is “afraid rank-and-file Democrats may actually want to compromise and work with their Republican colleagues”.
