The following is a reprint of the letter sent to My Social Jacksonville administrator Colby Huff regarding the nomination of Betsy DeVos to serve as Secretary of Education under President Donald Trump.
Thank you for contacting me about the nomination of Betsy DeVos to be the Secretary of Education. I appreciate hearing from you.
President Trump nominated Betsy DeVos to serve as Secretary of Education. Ms. DeVos is a businesswoman and an advocate for school choice and voucher programs.
While I will review each nomination carefully, I am concerned by Ms. DeVos’ long-standing support of school voucher programs and lack of experience working in a school environment.
The nomination of individuals to serve as cabinet secretaries is often one of the earliest and most important decisions made by a President. Cabinet secretaries work to implement the President’s policies in their roles as the heads of their respective federal agencies. They can set the tone and direction for the federal government’s interaction with people in far-reaching ways.
I will keep your views in mind as the Senate considers President Trump’s cabinet nominations. I am committed to ensuring a qualified nominee is confirmed to lead our education reform efforts.
